The Hay Experts Dandelion Leaves are of the highest quality and are packed full of natural goodness.  Dandelion is a natural food for rabbits, guinea pigs, and others, encouraging normal foraging behaviour and environmental enrichment—feeding Dandelion is a great way to keep your little ones active and happy!

Dandelion leaf is rich in vitamins (especially A, C, K, and E), minerals and other nutrients and is a natural and healthy forage to feed rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small animals, as well as herbivorous reptiles such as tortoises.

Dandelion has a long history of health benefits and is widely known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is also high in calcium, so ideal for the very young and elderly, where an increase in calcium is desired for bone health.

The Hay Experts Dandelion is high in fibre and helps support digestive health. It can also act as an appetite stimulant in times of illness or recovery.

Dandelion is also a diuretic (so encouraging normal urination, which in turn encourages water intake), so supporting urinary health as well as helping to support normal kidney and liver function.

As dandelion is naturally high in calcium, care should be taken with quantities being fed to those with urinary issues or known bladder calcium issues. That said, as Dandelion is a diuretic, it can also be beneficial to those with this condition, as its' diuretic properties can be useful. Our Animal Medicines Advisor is on hand to answer any questions on this.

The Hay Experts Dandelion is grown organically and hand-sorted to ensure optimal quality and is available in 150g and 1kg bags.

Dandelion can be fed as a treat or added to hay to encourage hay consumption and normal foraging behaviour. It can also be mixed with other flowers or leaves to create a tasty forage mix, as your little ones desire!

FAQs

Can Rabbits or Guinea Pigs eat Dandelion?

Yes, rabbits, guinea pigs and many other small animals (including herbivorous reptiles such as tortoises) can eat Dandelion.

Dandelion is a natural and healthy food source, rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. It can be added to hay, fed on its' own, or added to other leaves or flowers for added enjoyment.

Can rabbits eat all the parts of the Dandelion plant?

Yes, rabbits (and guinea pigs and other small animals) can eat all the parts of the dandelion plant.

Dandelion is an amazing plant, full of natural goodness with the flower, leaves, stem and roots all being edible.

Rabbits guinea pigs and other small animals enjoy the leaves, as well as the root, stem and bright yellow flower

In addition to small animals, the dandelion flower is often one of the first sources of food for bees in the spring and so is a valuable food source for this vulnerable species.

How much Dandelion can i feed to my rabbit or guinea pig?

Whilst there is no definitive answer to this, as it depends on factors such as diet, age, activity, and overall health, it is generally understood that dandelion can be fed daily in moderation.

It is a natural and valuable food source for rabbits, guinea pigs and others, offering not only nutritional benefit but environmental enrichment and enjoyment too.

As it is high in calcium, dandelion is especially important to the young and elderly as it can help support bone health.

However, this should be reduced to feeding as a treat level, and not every day, to those who have kidney, bladder or known calcium issues due to the relatively high levels of calcium found in dandelion. Some vets may recommend feeding a controlled amount of dandelion to those with these conditions due to its many health benefits, and veterinary advice is recommended in such instances.

Dandelion is known to support urinary health as it is a diruetic and can help with urination/water intake and our Animal Medicines Advisor is on hand to help with any questions on this.

At what age can I start feeding dandelion to my rabbit or guinea pig?

There is no specific age that is accepted as the right age to feed dandelion to the very young as young rabbits or guinea pigs will start copying their mum and nibble on the foods she is enjoying as they start to wean.

As dandelion is a natural food source, rabbits come into contact with it from a very young age and as it is packed full of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, it is a valuable food source for them.

It's high calcium level will also help support their normal bone development and help their mum with her milk production too!

We recommend introducing dandlion slowly, as a new food, to any animal that has not had it before; it's better to limit the amount able to be consumed for a week or two rather than risk an upset stomach, diarrhoea, or worse.

The Hay Experts Animal Medicines Advisor is on hand to offer guidance should any queries arise on this.

Good quality leaves

I often buy plantain and dandelion for my houserabbit, and although the 1kg bags are better value I've found the smaller bags of 150g better quality than the big bags, not sure why that is. This 1kg bag is full of nice dried leaves, and bunny is eating them with relish.

Bulk is better!

We have seven rabbits who love dandelion in all its forms - fresh to dried. They love Hay Experts dried dandelion forage in particular, and have their heads in the bowl before |I can get the dandelion in! We need lots of this stuff for so many hungry mouths, but smaller packets mean more plastic waste. It makes sense to buy in bulk if you have lots of rabbits!

Bunnies loved it

Hi, my two bunnies loved it.
You have to be careful though when taking some out of the bag there are thorns in it. I ended up with a few in my finger. But rabbits are happy, will buy again
